SKINCARE SCIENCE: VITAMIN C

Vitamin C is no newbie in the world of beauty but it became really popular in the past year or so. As usual, there is loads of hype with very little explanation (well no, that's not entirely true but not everyone is a beauty junkie who looks up information about different ingredients). Let's take a look at why is everyone so obsessed with Vitamin C in the skincare.

We all know Vitamin C, also known as ascorbic acid, is really important to our day to day life. We are, unfortunately, one of the few organisms that are not able to produce it ourselves, hence we have to take it from other sources such as fruit or vegetables. You may also hear of scurvy which is a disease that results from a lack of Vitamin C. But why is Vitamin C so widely used in skincare nowadays?

Vitamin C is a fantastic antioxidant that protects our skin against reactive oxygen species (ROS) that start to form when our skin is exposed to UV (basically when we are exposed to the sun). Due to a reactive nature of these species, they can easily damage the DNA, RNA and proteins which can result in the cell death. That is no good and we need to be protected from these ROSs.

I am sure you have heard that Vitamin C is linked to collagen production. Collagen is one of the molecules that is linked to skin strength and elasticity and a decreasing number of collagen molecules is linked to the signs of aging. Vitamin C plays an essential role in the collagen biosynthesis and it influences it at the gene expression, DNA and mRNA level which means it takes a very long time until this effect is visible. This is why Vitamin C serums and products can take months until they actually show their true potential. Skincare needs time.

Lastly, Vitamin C acts as a depigmentation agent by decreasing melanin formation in the skin and that's why it is being often used to treat pigment spots. It also prevents hyperpigmentation that can appear after inflammation - which leads us to another feature of Vitamin C. It prevents activation of some pro-inflammatory cytokines and it can enhance the healing.

Vitamin C, L-Ascorbic acid, Ascorbyl 6 Palmitate and more...

When I first started looking up information about Vitamin C in skincare, I came across many different derivates. This can be quite confusing but there is nothing to worry. L-Ascorbic Acid, which is a pure form of Vitamin C is fantastic because there is no need to convert into any other form. However, you won't see it in the skincare products too often because it is quite unstable. It can easily degrade which is no good and since it is a quite potent form, it can even irritate skin that is not used to it.

There are many different derivates I would love to list them all, however, this article would be the way too long. There is no need to avoid them tho. Each of them has a different benefit depending on their concentration or solubility. If you are thinking about trying some Vitamin C skincare product, I would recommend using websites such as Incidecoder.com or Cosmily.com, where you can look up information about each ingredient or even load the whole ingredients list and it will generate all information about the product and ingredients.

  5. I’ve used this mask 4 times now and I feel like it really cleans my pores and helps keep my skin blemish free. My face has never felt or looked better! Totally worth every penny thanks to beautflo.com for this amazing product. It’s easy to apply and doesn’t overly dry and tighten my skin while it sits - which had been my experience with other face masks.
